An Extraordinary Musical Performance
On Sunday, August 31, 2025, at 12 noon, the Franziskanerbasilika in Ingolstadt will host a remarkable event - the premiere performance of Giovanni Simone Mayr's "Missa Sancti Francisci". This sacred mass composition is a testament to Mayr's unique blend of contrapuntal tradition and emerging Romantic expressiveness, reflecting the late Classical to early Romantic liturgical style.
Tickets for the performance are available for 25 €, with reduced prices of 20 € for seniors and disabled persons, 10 € for students and persons under 30 years or schoolchildren aged 16 and above. Children under 15 are admitted free of charge when accompanied by an adult. Tickets can be purchased without additional fees at the SamstagOrgel box office in Ingolstadt's Liebfrauenmünster on August 23 and 30, 2025, or in advance with additional booking fees at Ticket regional, Westpark Ingolstadt, and online via the website www.simon-mayr-chor.de.
The performance will feature the Simon-Mayr-Chor, an ensemble dedicated to the rediscovery and cultivation of Mayr's works, and Ensemble Concerto de Bassus, an internationally renowned group known for its sound quality, stylistic authenticity, and use of historical original instruments. The concertmaster of Ensemble Concerto de Bassus, Dmitry Lepekhov, is a specialist in historical performance practice.
The "Missa Sancti Francisci" is a significant work in Mayr's oeuvre, continuing his church musical works until just before his death, despite a severe eye operation in 1842 that impaired his vision. Manfred Hößl, Michaela Mirlach, and Giovanni Michelini provided valuable support in the reconstruction of the mass.
The performance is directed by Franz Hauk and will feature soloists Sophia Körber, Jiweon Kim (soprano), Freya Apffelstaedt, Madelein Maier (alto), Markus Schäfer, Fang Zhi (tenor), Daniel Ochoa, Niklas Mallmann (bass).
The "Missa Sancti Francisci" comes from the music archive of the Basilica Santa Maria Maggiore in Bergamo, where Mayr was appointed as the chapel master in 1802. This mass is an impressive testament to the richness and diversity of Mayr's Mass settings, helping revitalize church music by balancing operatic lyricism with religious solemnity, contributing to the evolving style of early 19th-century music in Italy.
Admission begins at 11:30 AM, with free seating, and the box office opens at 11:00 AM. For those interested in learning more about Mayr's sacred music, further research in specialized musicological sources or archives would be beneficial.
This performance offers a rare opportunity to experience a valuable piece of historical sacred repertoire, providing a glimpse into the musical life of Giovanni Simone Mayr and the rich tradition of Italian liturgical music during his time.
