An American intelligence agent plotted to transmit confidential data to Russia's Federal Intelligence Service.
In an extraordinary case, a US intelligence officer is under investigation for allegedly attempting to provide sensitive national defense information to a foreign government. As per reports by WDR, NDR, and Süddeutsche Zeitung, the individual in question was a civilian employee at the Military Intelligence Agency (DIA), and is now facing charges of espionage.
The arrest took place last week in Virginia, where the suspect - identified as Nathan Vilas Laatsch - worked as an IT specialist for the DIA. Previous to this, Laatsch had held a Top Secret security clearance and worked within the Insider Threat Division [2][3][4]. When he joined the DIA in 2019, he became a civilian employee [2][4].
According to court documents, Laatsch, now 28, began expressing his discontent with the US government under President Trump through an anonymous email sent to the Federal Intelligence Service (BND) at the beginning of March. The BND promptly informed the US authorities about this incident [1].
On May 30, the FBI declared that Laatsch had access to highly classified data and had offered classified material to a "friendly foreign government." Allegedly, he was driven by his disagreement with the values of the Trump administration [2][4]. The suspect even expressed his desire to gain the citizenship of the country he was aiding, in exchange for his services.
Throughout the investigation, Laatsch believed he was communicating with a representative from this foreign government, but unknowingly, he was conversing with an FBI agent. On May 1, he handed over classified information, but was arrested by the FBI during the next scheduled handover [2][4]. If found guilty of espionage, Laatsch could potentially face a lengthy prison sentence.
