Amy Poehler recounts an extremely mortifying incident during her initial encounter with Michelle Obama.
A Tale of Drool and Starstruck Nervousness - Amy Poehler's Mortifying Moment with Michelle Obama
Who says seasoned performers like Amy Poehler are immune to awkward, red-faced moments on set? Even during her hit sitcom Parks and Recreation, where the comedian played the quirky and lovable Leslie Knope, she found herself in an embarrassing predicament when Michelle Obama made a cameo in 2014.
On her podcast Good Hang, Poehler, 53, admitted to her former First Lady guest that she nearly cost the show a prime scene due to her starstruck excitement. "We were busy, running lines and trying to figure out how to act with royalty," she said. But the excitement got the best of her when they went to film their first scene together.
"I mean, you can't be a good actress on top of everything else," Poehler admitted, "I was nervous. I wanted to get it right but in a natural way. So it was pretty much a blur."
In that particular scene from Parks and Rec's Moving Up: Part 1, Leslie meets Michelle Obama unexpectedly at a National Parks conference in San Francisco. Shocked by encountering her heroine, she enthusiastically nodded her head while Obama was speaking, prompting the question, "Are you nodding because you agree with me?"
"Yes, I agree with you on all things, throughout history, until the end of time, forever," Leslie responded, unaware of her drooling on the set.
Obama, 61, laughed off the memory and claimed she didn't remember the incident, with Poehler expressing relief. "I don't know if I saw it," remarked Obama once again, putting Poehler's mind at ease.
For all her experience and fame, both women agreed that their own children are the hardest to impress. That, however, did not stop the pair from trying to share valuable advice and life lessons with their offspring, even if it often fell on deaf ears.
The comedian shares Archie, 16, and Abel, 14, with ex-husband Will Arnett, while Obama shares Malia, 26, and Sasha, 23, with her husband, former president Barack. Although Obama has made a lasting impact on the world and inspired countless people with her speeches and writings, her children have a habit of ignoring her wisdom.
"Every now and then, I make a good point to [my kids], and I was like, 'Do you know who I am? I'm Michelle Obama,'" she said indignantly. "People line up for my advice, and you just walk away like I'm stupid."
Nevertheless, the Duo addressed their lives and emotional experiences during Michelle's first Mother's Day since her mother Marian Robinson's passing.
Opening up about her grief, Michelle took to Instagram to reflect on her loss and the emotions that come with it, "As many people know, we lost our mom, and just sorting through how you feel because the first instinct is to say 'I feel good, I'm great, I'm good'." Both Michelle and her brother Craig Robinson discussed their personal grief, admitting that managing other people's emotions had overshadowed their own for a while[1][2][3].
