Amusing Police Officer in Action
Got Tales a-Plenty, Thanks to Strangers
Every gig has its peculiarities, dangers, and nuisances. For instance, I'm frequently cornered by strangers, who insist on regaling me with their outlandish tales at the most inconvenient times, and then expect me to incorporate them into my work.
"Hey, listen up, man. I've got a killer anecdote for you - it's going to crack you up!"
Two hours later, after being subjected to fifty similar "Ha-bloody-has," the denouement of this purportedly laugh-out-loud story boils down to the comedian stumbling into a bank's glass door, drunk off his rocker.
"Brilliant! I wouldn't have thought of that on my own, mate, thanks a ton," I have to say with feigned enthusiasm to avoid being seen as an arrogant, self-righteous wannabe wordsmith.
A Taste of Humor
Today, at the café, I encountered a special breed of humor enthusiast. The chap spent hours regurgitating one of my older stories, straight from one of my books, for my benefit, so I could take notes. I wrote that yarn seven years back.
In the end, he said sheepishly, "Well, my story ain't a laugh riot either. But if you come up with a snappy opening, cook up a few chuckles, and toss in a clever twist at the end, it could be something."
I thanked him for turning my day sour, hopped into my Ford Transit, and drove home, all pumped up - only to be pulled over by the cops, as if I wasn't frustrated enough!
"Take a deep breath into this gadget," the officer barked after scrutinizing my papers meticulously.
"Officer, there's no need for that. I've only had tea today. And tea doesn't contain alcohol," I retorted indignantly.
"Oh, really? That's what every driver says, now blow," he commanded.
Soused and Slayed
I got out of the car and offered a reluctant lungful into the tube.
"See, nada," I said triumphantly.
"That's what you call nothing?" the policeman snickered, "You've got 3.8 BAC! You can kiss your license goodbye for a few years! You reckless driver, you!"
My legs started quivering in shock, and I plopped down onto the ground.
"Ma'am, get up, already! I'm allowed to crack a joke or two, right? You haven't had a drop, and you're good to go. Now you can even pen a humorous piece about this, can't you? I'd love a mention in your article, Ma'am. My name's Harry. Harry Lang."
