Amursk's Central Square to transform into a modern, inclusive community hub by 2027
Amursk has finalised plans to revitalise its Central Square after winning a nationwide competition for urban development. The project, backed by 150 million rubles in funding, aims to create a modern, accessible space for residents. Construction is set to begin later this year, with completion expected by 2027.
The redesign follows a concept shaped by feedback from local residents. It includes improved lighting to keep the square usable in the evenings, along with new pedestrian pathways and contemporary seating. Waste bins and relaxation zones will also be added to enhance comfort.
Accessibility is a key focus, with ramps ensuring barrier-free movement for people with limited mobility. The fountain area will become an interactive pedestrian feature, adding a dynamic element to the space. Ruslan Kolesnikov, the city's head, stated that the goal is to build a safe, inclusive environment for everyone. The project secured funding after winning a competition for the best urban development initiatives in Russia's Far Eastern Federal District. While exact figures for similar projects in the region are unavailable, nationwide efforts under the 'Urban Environment' programme have transformed over 50,000 public spaces in recent years.
Work on Central Square will start in the coming months, with phased development planned until 2027. The updated design will introduce modern amenities, better accessibility, and extended usability. Once complete, the square will serve as a revitalised hub for the community.
