Former Dutch National Team Captain John Heitinga set as Ajax's New Head Coach
Amsterdam - Ajax Amsterdam has appointed John Heitinga, a former Dutch national team player, as their new head coach. The 41-year-old, who previously played for clubs such as Hertha BSC, will take over from Francesco Farioli, who left Ajax after a dismal championship finish. Heitinga, a former interim trainer at Ajax in 2023, has signed a contract that runs until the summer of 2027.
"I'm excited to take on the challenge of leading Ajax as head coach, and I feel deeply honored to have been given this opportunity," said Heitinga.
Throughout his footballing career, Heitinga garnered considerable experience, with stints as Jong Ajax's manager, an interim coach at Ajax, and an assistant coach for West Ham United and Liverpool. He has now returned to Ajax, aiming to revitalize the team following a disappointing season.
Heitinga's appointment marks a homecoming for the multitalented coach, who won two Eredivisie titles as a player with Ajax and represented the Netherlands national team over 85 times, featuring in two World Cups.
