Amorim counters Keane: "If we can't accept all facets..."
In the wake of the spectacular 4-1 win over Athletic Bilbao that cemented their Europa League final spot, manager Ruben Amorim took the opportunity at the subsequent press conference to address the harsh criticism levied against him by notorious former Manchester United captain, Roy Keane.
Keane unleashed a scathing critique of Manchester United's dismal season, labelling it a "complete and utter disgrace," a sentiment that Amorim, to some extent, didn't contest. "We're doing our best, but I agree we could perform better. I don't disagree with the criticism because we've earned it," Amorim admitted, as recounted by the British newspaper, the Mirror.
"If we can't handle criticism in a season like this, then we're in the wrong game," Amorim started, stone-faced and unapologetic. "But, at this juncture, I believe it's crucial to be smart and take risks. We'll have to accept a barrage of criticism from everyone, as their expectations are decisively high," he continued.
"However, I must make decisions based on what's best for the club, not for myself. So, I've chosen to rest all the players because winning the final is of paramount importance. We can't salvage anything in the Premier League," he concluded.
Amorim's decision to field weakened teams in certain matches to prioritize the Europa League was a significant point of contention in Keane's criticism. The heated exchange between the two had Keane branding Manchester United's league performances a "disgrace," while Amorim maintained a resolute stance, advocating for his tactical decisions in the face of the criticism.
