Har Ghar Tiranga: A Unifying Symbol of National Pride

The Har Ghar Tiranga campaign, launched in 2022 under India's Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav initiative, has become an annual tradition that encourages millions of citizens to hoist the national flag at their homes. This initiative fosters a personal and collective expression of patriotism and national unity.

Since its inception, the Har Ghar Tiranga campaign has become a mass movement, transcending regional, cultural, and linguistic differences. Union Home Minister Amit Shah hoisted the national flag at his residence in New Delhi, while Union Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan also participated in the campaign and expressed pride in hoisting the flag with his family. Prime Minister Narendra Modi continues to lead this campaign, binding the country in a thread of unity.

The campaign has been instrumental in turning flag hoisting into a symbol of unity and patriotism among Indians. Citizens from diverse backgrounds, including students, faculty, and volunteers, actively engage in flag hoisting and related patriotic activities. Schools, colleges, and community groups participate vigorously as part of their Independence Day celebrations.

The Ministry of Culture has expanded the campaign through a Volunteer Programme, where volunteers visit neighborhoods to assist households in correctly hoisting the flag, distribute flags, and encourage participation via selfies uploaded on the official platform. Top volunteers receive certificates and recognition at state and national levels.

Participants can register online, upload selfies with the Tiranga, and receive certificates and digital badges, deepening engagement especially among youth and social media users. The campaign supports khadi and village industries by increasing demand for locally made flags, aligning with the government’s broader initiatives of Aatmanirbhar Bharat (self-reliant India) and Vocal for Local, which have led to record growth in these sectors.

By transforming the flag from a formal emblem displayed mainly on official occasions into a symbol owned and cherished personally by each citizen, the initiative fosters unity and patriotism at the grassroots level. This year, the Har Ghar Tiranga campaign invites participants to hoist the national flag and share their Tiranga selfie for Independence Day 2025. The Ministry of Culture also offers the opportunity to become a Har Ghar Tiranga Ambassador, with a badge and certificate for Independence Day 2025.

In summary, the Har Ghar Tiranga campaign has evolved into a powerful tool of patriotic mobilization, cultural education, economic support for local industries, and community building, making it a continuing and expanding tradition in India’s Independence Day celebrations.
