Something somewhat unpredictable, however, has been Luis Severino's fluctuating performance, particularly since signing with the team as a free agent after a promising comeback season with the Mets in 2024.
Though Severino has seen success on the road this season, his lackluster stats at the A's temporary home in Sacramento have sparked whispers of him potentially being traded.
As noted by Jon Heyman on Thursday, Severino is definitely on the trading block.[1] Given the Mets' dire need for pitching help with Griffin Canning incurring a season-ending injury,[2] Severino was inquired about a potential trade.
"I'm not thinking about that," he stated before the A's 7-0 victory over the Yankees at the Stadium. "I'm just focused on doing my job and improving."[3]
Severino has acknowledged that his skill level at home has been subpar (0-7, 6.79 ERA with a 1.596 WHIP in 10 starts at Sutter Health Park in West Sacramento), while his road performance has been commendable (2-1, 2.27 with a 1.031 WHIP in seven outings).[3]
Despite the speculation surrounding his future, Severino has not received any word of potential trade discussions and insists that his focus remains solely on his current team.[1]
"It hasn't been the best year so far, but I'm healthy,"[3] he said, adding that he hopes his performances on the road and following the All-Star break will improve.
Whether Severino remains with the A's post-All-Star break remains uncertain. According to Severino, he has not received any interest from other teams.[1]
Regarding a potential reunion with the Mets, Severino indicated that it's not entirely up to him, stating that he would be open to the idea should the opportunity arise.[1]

In light of recent events, Severino has been outspoken about the struggle of playing in a minor league stadium, which he was well aware of when he signed his three-year, $67 million contract with the Athletics.[1] Severino acknowledges that the venue's environment and dimensions have hindered his performance.[1]
