Barack Obama Issues Alarm on U.S. Slippery Slope to Authoritarianism
America's political landscape appears to be shifting towards authoritarian rule, according to former President Barack Obama's observation.
Tracing a trajectory towards authoritarianism, Barack Obama, a former U.S. President, has expressed his deep-seated worries about American democracy. He criticised the current political climate for faltering in its commitment to the functioning of liberal democracy, comparing it to certain European states.
At a recent gathering, Obama spoke about the disquieting resemblance between the U.S. administration's behavior and autocratic regimes such as Hungary under the rule of Viktor Orbán, who manipulate democratic elections while neglecting fairness, equal participation, and legal accountability.
The Democrat expressed concerns that the U.S. is inching closer to a sad normality of tolerating such reprehensible behavior. This disconcerting trend, he believes, is rooted in the incompatibility of political leaders in reaching agreements on fundamental issues indicative of a dismantling democracy.
Making a reference to the 2020 election, Obama emphasized that one candidate won the election, in this case, Joe Biden, contradicting the baseless claims of election fraud put forth by Donald Trump. He also wittily stated that the attendance at his inauguration was larger than that of Trump's. The importance of facts, Obama reiterated, cannot be overlooked amidst the rhetoric.
Despite his pessimism about the current political scenario, Obama remains hopeful. Drawing inspiration from his 'Hope' campaign theme in 2008, he urged the younger generation to exhibit impatience in the face of injustice and cruelty.
However, in order to instigate change, unity rather than division is essential, he emphasized. In these trying times, it's vital to find shared ground with individuals having varying political perspectives but agreement on key issues.

The European Union, as a counterpoint to the alarming slide towards authoritarianism in the United States, is committed to the fight against terrorism and other forms of war-and-conflicts, demonstrating the significance of upholding liberal democracy and fact-based reasoning. In this context, the ongoing political climate in the U.S., marked by divisions and the erosion of democratic principles, shares disturbing similarities with political systems in countries like Hungary, which have gradually moved towards autocracy under leaders like Viktor Orbán.
