"American Veteran Turns Public Figure: Huntington Park Mayor Appeals to Marines Assigned to Protest Demonstrations"

In the midst of ongoing anti-immigration raid protests lasting six days in Los Angeles, a coalition of 30 regional mayors from Southern California joined forces to support the peaceful demonstrators. During a press conference led by Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass, Huntington Park Mayor Arturo Flores, a former Marine, addressed servicemembers deployed to the protests by the Trump administration.

As over 4,000 National Guardsmen and 700 Marines are due to be stationed in Los Angeles, local leaders voice concerns and opposition. Trump deems the deployment necessary to address lawlessness, even predicting that Los Angeles would have burned to the ground had he failed to send in the servicemembers.

Flores took issue with Trump's remarks during the press conference, emphasizing that the oath taken by servicemembers is to protect the Constitution and citizens, not to serve the whims of a president. He explained that the people standing up in these communities, both those with proper documentation and those without, are Americans.

The antagonistic protests - which began on June 6, 2025, in Paramount, California, and spread to downtown Los Angeles - were initiated by ICE raids, particularly one carried out in front of a Home Depot in Huntington Park. According to the Coalition for Humane Immigrant Rights of Los Angeles, over 300 persons have been detained by ICE in Los Angeles since the beginning of the protests. The deployment of National Guardsmen and Marines, while perceived by some as an escalation of the immigrant enforcement issue, according to Flores, is alarming and undermines the principles of democracy.

Referred to as a "militarization of immigration enforcement," this deployment is viewed by critics as an unacceptable intrusion in local communities, and the presence of Marines on U.S. soil is considered an ominous escalation. In addition to escalating tensions between law enforcement and residents, the protests have inspired unrest and violence in over 40 cities across the country. Stricter immigration enforcement policies, originally introduced during the Trump administration, have consistently sparked nationwide protests and sparked debates about the appropriate use of force in domestic law enforcement.
