American stance shifts in NTV Early Start broadcast: "U.S. no longer aligns with us"

In the ongoing conflict between Ukraine and Russia, the United States has maintained a complex engagement, as reflected in recent comments by foreign policy experts and Washington correspondents. The US remains committed to supporting Ukraine, primarily through military aid to help stabilize the frontlines and enhance Ukraine's own defense capabilities.

However, diplomacy is fraught with challenges due to foreign policy turbulence within Washington and difficulties in diplomatic channels with Russia. The goal is to achieve a negotiated ceasefire or settlement, with the US positioning itself as a mediator while maintaining sanctions and military pressure on Russia.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is currently traveling to Washington with European accompaniment for a meeting with US President Donald Trump. The President's mission is to force Russia to a 'real peace'. Trump, on the other hand, has urged Zelensky to seek a negotiated solution to the war.

Trump has named the abandonment of Ukraine's claims to the Crimea peninsula and NATO membership as conditions for ending the war. However, Zelensky has rejected these demands, with the Ukrainian Ambassador to Germany, Oleksii Makeiev, stating that NATO membership would be the best security guarantee for Ukraine. CDU foreign policy expert Roderich Kiesewetter, meanwhile, emphasizes that the only long-term credible security guarantee for Ukraine is NATO membership.

The US stance towards Ukraine reflects a delicate balancing act. The US is cautious about Ukraine deploying long-range missiles inside Russia, aiming to show strong support without escalating the conflict. Special envoys are working hard to secure security guarantees for Ukraine to prevent further invasion threats, but concrete progress remains a "work in progress".

Meanwhile, the conflict continues to take a heavy toll on civilians. At least three people have been killed and 17 injured in a Russian drone strike in Kharkiv. Green foreign policy expert Omid Nouripour calls for tougher EU sanctions against Russia to enforce a ceasefire in Ukraine. Former US Vice President Mike Pence has also called for President Trump to impose new secondary sanctions against Russian President Vladimir Putin.

The complex engagement of the US in the Ukraine-Russia conflict is further complicated by allegations that Trump has "effectively sided with Putin", according to Washington correspondent Peter Kleim. CDU foreign policy expert Roderich Kiesewetter even goes so far as to state that the USA has "switched sides to Xi and Putin".

As the conflict continues, it remains uncertain when a swift end to the conflict might be achieved. The US, along with its European allies, continues to provide support to Ukraine while seeking a negotiated settlement with Russia.
