American Pope Leo XIV and President Trump: A Closeness Examination

Trump's newest pal in the Vatican ain't none other than ol' Pope Leo XIV, but don't get too excited, Trump fans. This American pope isn't exactly Trump's type of guy. In fact, Papa Leo IV seems to be more of an opposition figure, unlike Timothy Michael Dolan, Archbishop of New York, who's known for his hard-line positions and friendly relationship with the prez.

Trump himself acknowledged the Archbishop of New York but not the new pope in his congratulatory statements, suggesting Leo IV wasn't his go-to gal. However, he did show some enthusiasm for the historic first American pope, expressing enthusiasm on his social media platform, Truth Social.

Pope Leo XIV, born Robert Francis Prevost, doesn't exactly align with Trump's viewpoints. In fact, some analytics consider his election as a blow to the American government. François Mabille, director of the Geopolitical Observatory of Religion, stated, "In a way, it's an opposition to Christian nationalists like JD Vance who constitute one of the strong currents supporting Trump."

Indeed, Leo XIV voiced his disagreement with Trump's right-hand man, JD Vance, by sharing an article critical of Vance's views. The article challenged Vance's interpretation of Jesus' commandment to "hierarchize our love for others" as unfounded[1]. Leo XIV shares Pope Francis' vision on supporting the poor and migrants and has showed concern for social justice issues, including gun reform and racism, following George Floyd's murder[1][2].
