U.S. President Donald Trump seemingly implored Russian President Vladimir Putin to afford mercy to Ukrainian troops allegedly encircled by Russian forces in the Kursk region, as stated in a post on Truth Social. The brunt of his message: "Right now, countless Ukrainian soldiers are besieged by the Russian army, a situation they finds them in a precarious and weakened state." He urged Putin to avoid bloodshed and save their lives.

Though unclear how Trump communicated this plea, his special envoy, Steve Witkoff, held discussions with Putin at the Kremlin on a recent Thursday evening. Over the past few days, Russian forces have advanced on the Ukrainian salient in the Kursk region, with the Russian military declaring that the remaining Ukrainian troops were encircled. Nonetheless, Ukrainian authorities have yet to corroborate this claim, and independent corroboration of Moscow's assertions is scarce.
