"Slipping Slide" - Obama Warns U.S. Teetering on the Edge of Autocracy
America apparently sliding towards autocratic rule, according to Obama's observation
Take a seat, folks. Barack Obama, former POTUS, ain’t holding back his criticism for the current state of the American government. He’s sounding the alarm bell, saying liberal democracy in the good ol' USA is shakier than a Vegas slot machine. And guess what? He's drawing a parallel to a European nation that's no stranger to authoritarian rule.
Barack's got some strong words for Donald Trump and his administration’s antics, comparing the current state of affairs to Hungary under Prime Minister Viktor Orbán. In a casual chat, he made it clear that the way things operate these days is more autocrat-like than it's been since World War II – and that’s a serious concern.
"Listening to the folks in power these days gives me a weak belief in democracy," Obama said, as per Connecticut Public Radio. "It's like autocratic regimes. It's like Hungary under Orbán. When elections are held, but not everything else – like everyone's voice being heard, no one being above the law – it ain't right."
Barack ain't mincing his words. He warns that we're on the precipice of normalizing un-democratic behavior, citing a lack of agreement on fundamental issues as the main driver of conflicts.
He even brought up the last election. "A person won in 2020 who ain't complaining about it," referring to President Trump's false claims of voter fraud that he lost to Joe Biden. "And that's a fact," added the former POTUS. "Facts matter."
Despite the grim outlook, Obama’s still got hope for the future. "I’m still the 'Hope' guy," the 63-year-old said, referencing his election campaign theme. "I tell the young ones, it’s necessary to be angry about injustice and cruelty. But change comes when we can find common ground with people, even if we don't see eye to eye on everything."
