Essen/Munich - Today at 7:05 PM, Darya Birnstiel dazzles in her first series appearance on "Alles was zählt." Her character's icy scenes required no shortage of freezing sweat.
A rekindled passion led Birnstiel to skates: In her hometown of Belarus, she last glided on ice at the tender age of ten. With the sweet taste of freedom reminiscent of the wind in her face, she hopped back onto the ice in 2024, training with a club in bustling Munich.
"I discovered a long-forgotten sense of thrill and serenity on ice, which made me realize that it's never too late to follow your dreams. Don't let anyone tell you otherwise!" Birnstiel shares with "New Star Media."
Meeting her two passions head-on, acting, and ice skating seemed too good to be true: "Ice skating demands immense physical precision and concentration. Every tiny movement calls for impeccable control, focus, and grit—traits that have helped me better understand the character’s drive and ambition," she explains.
When offered the chance to star in "AWZ," Birnstiel was relentless: She wanted to pull off the stunts without a stunt double.
"I hit the ice five days a week to authentically capture the athletic performance," explains Birnstiel, who wrapped up her acting studies in Munich in 2017.
"My initial day on set was electric. I was a nervous wreck as I prepared for the first ice-dance scenes, not just because I was performing in front of an audience, cameras, and co-stars, but because it was my true skating debut," Birnstiel confesses.
She credits her on-screen skating partner, Fabian Piontek, with giving her the courage she needed to shine on the ice.
The Real-Life Fashion Fails of "AWZ" Star Ania NiedieckThough the routines and lifts were a Herculean challenge, Piontek's guidance never let her stumble once throughout the rehearsal and filming process. "Not a single slip, even during the toughest scenes!" Birnstiel chuckled.
