California, known for its ambitious goals, has made significant strides in various areas over the past decade, but progress has been mixed, especially in ending homelessness, achieving carbon neutrality, and enhancing seismic safety.
Homelessness
Despite large investments and statewide initiatives to address homelessness, the number of homeless individuals in California remains high. Factors such as high housing costs, limited affordable housing supply, and complex social issues have hindered major reductions. While some programs have shown benefits, overall systemic challenges in affordable housing development and services remain barriers.
Carbon Neutrality
California aims to achieve carbon neutrality by 2045, with intermediary goals like the phaseout of natural gas appliances by 2045. However, progress on electrification of water and space heating is slow, with less than 1% of gas heaters replaced by electric alternatives in key regions. Barriers include high costs, technical challenges, and lack of detailed information on housing electrification feasibility.
Seismic Safety
