The recent finale of The Handmaid's Tale has sent ripples through the fandom, with beloved characters like Emily making a triumphant return. In a thrilling turn of events, the once demure Martha Rita, portrayed by Amanda Brugel, joined Mayday's rebellion, wielding a gun to save June's life.

In an interview with THR, Brugel shared her thoughts on Rita's dramatic and surprising transformation. From being a minor character in Season 1, Rita's layers were gradually unveiled, revealing her fierce and vulnerable sides. By the end of the series, Rita was fighting alongside Mayday in both Serena's wedding and the liberation of Boston.

Brugel disclosed interesting tidbits about Rita's role in the story, including the fact that she was on a list of characters Margaret Atwood hinted might not be killed off. However, as a dedicated fan, I did worry for Rita in New Bethlehem, and was relieved when she managed to reunite with her family and aide Mayday.

Rita was conspicuously absent in the series finale, except for a brief appearance in June's fantasy karaoke scene. Interestingly, Rita does not feature in Margaret Atwood's original The Testaments novel, something THR pointed out during their interview with Brugel. Intriguingly, Brugel hinted at the possibility of her return to the role of beloved character Rita, teasing: "She's not [in the novel]. But that doesn't mean you might not see her."

Production for The Testaments is currently underway, and as of now, Brugel has not been officially confirmed as part of the cast. As we eagerly await announcements on the spin-off series set in Gilead, Brugel's words leave us with a tantalizing glimmer of hope.

In the meantime, catch up on all five gripping seasons of The Handmaid's Tale on Hulu, and mark it down on your 2025 TV premiere list. Stay tuned for updates on The Testaments.

The upcoming daily blend on movies-and-tv entertainment features the current production of The Testaments, a spin-off series from the critically acclaimed show The Handmaid's Tale. One character from the original series sharing exciting new developments is Amanda Brugel, who portrayed Martha Rita, a character whose features were a daily blend of fierce and vulnerable, and whose potential return has been hinted by the actress herself.
