Alteration of the Everglades and Nearby Regions: Examination of the Impact of Global Warming
The Everglades, a unique and ancient wetland ecosystem in Florida, is not just a natural wonder but a vital protector of our cities and suburbs. This vast expanse of sawgrass marshes, mangrove forests, and freshwater sloughs, formed over 100,000 years ago due to climate change, serves as a natural barrier against destructive hurricanes and storm surges.
Unfortunately, the Everglades face numerous threats. Category 5 hurricanes and king tides regularly batter Florida's coastline, causing damage to beaches and infrastructure. As sea levels rise, the Everglades are transforming into brackish wetlands, affecting local and surrounding ecosystems and fauna. This transformation could have a significant impact on the homes and lives of many people in the area.
The Everglades supports around 70 endangered species, including the Florida panther and wood stork. The destruction of this delicate ecosystem could precipitate inland flooding and land loss in Florida. Moreover, agricultural areas in Florida may lose a significant portion of their water resources due to the destruction of the Everglades.
The degradation of the Everglades can also have a devastating effect on the food chain. As taller plants die out, the loss of a valuable buffer from hurricanes and major storms in much of Florida could become a reality. Rising temperatures and poor practices are causing the death of coral reefs in Florida, adding to the list of environmental concerns.
Since the 1900s, efforts have been made to maintain the water quality, manage invasive species, and prevent expansion into the Everglades. These efforts are crucial to honour the Everglades and the effort put into preserving it. The politician currently responsible for the protection of the Everglades in the state of Florida is Governor Ron DeSantis.
However, development pressures continue to mount. Developers in Florida are building strip malls and expensive real-estate, threatening the fragile balance of the Everglades. The local aquifers stored under the limestone caves are at risk of being ravaged by the destruction of the Everglades.
The destruction of the Everglades has the potential to exceed the projections of current home buyers in terms of damage. Without the efforts to maintain the Everglades, Florida would likely look significantly different today. It is essential to recognise the incoming waves of destruction and try to save what we can to honour the Everglades and the effort put into preserving it.
