Altay braces for a bitter cold snap with record-low temperatures in early February

The Altay region will face shifting weather conditions in early February. A cold spell is set to bring freezing temperatures, with overnight lows dropping sharply. Daytime readings will remain well below freezing, though slightly milder in the foothills.

On February 1, temperatures will peak at -7°C to -12°C (19°F to 10°F) by midday, climbing as high as -2°C (28°F) in the foothills. That night, readings will plummet to between -14°C and -19°C (-7°F to -2°F), with some areas seeing -20°C to -25°C (-4°F to -13°F). Southeasterly winds of 2–7 m/s (4–16 mph) will blow, and local gusts may reach 12 m/s (27 mph). Patches of frost and fog are also likely toward morning.

February 2 will bring a slight daytime recovery, with temperatures rising to -9°C to -14°C (16°F to 7°F), or -4°C (25°F) in the foothills. By nightfall, another deep freeze will take hold, pushing lows back to -14°C to -19°C (7°F to -2°F), and down to -20°C to -25°C (-4°F to -13°F) in certain spots. Winds will turn northeasterly at 2–7 m/s (4–16 mph), while frost and possible fog may form again by dawn.

No precipitation is expected during this period.

The region will experience a prolonged cold snap with bitter overnight temperatures. Wind shifts and localised gusts will add to the chill, while frost and fog may reduce visibility at times. Residents should prepare for sustained freezing conditions over the first two days of February.
