Lighting Up the Alster Fir Tree Once More

Just as the holiday spirit begins to stir, the magnificent 15-meter Nordmann fir tree on the Binnenalster will be aglow. On Thursday afternoon (5 p.m.), Mayor Carola Veit and District Head Ralf Neubauer will join forces to flip the switch, casting a warm, festive glow over the city. The tree, a proud descendant of a Schleswig-Holstein tree nursery, tangled its roots on a pontoon in Hamburg's city center on Sunday, anchored with the help of a sturdy crane. Decked out with 900 energy-efficient lamps, this year's tree is ready to illuminate the city's spirit until January 8.

During leisurely hours, the multicolored lights of this traditionally decked-out Alster fir tree have become synonymous with holiday joy. Visitors to the Christmas markets can appreciate the vibrant atmosphere this time-honored Customs tradition creates.

As the city of Hamburg bustles with holiday festivities like never before, here's a peek at some of the most popular Christmas markets that contribute to the overall festive ambiance:
