Toronto Blue Jays Welcome Back George Springer as They Lead Major Leagues

The Toronto Blue Jays secured a hard-fought 2-1 victory over the Chicago Cubs on Thursday, July 28, 2023, improving their American League-best record to 71-51.

Star outfielder George Springer, who had been out since July 28 due to a concussion, returned to the lineup on Saturday, August 16, 2025, after completing a rehab assignment with Triple-A Buffalo. Springer, who was slotted into the designated hitter spot, has had a strong season, hitting .291 with 18 home runs and 57 RBIs over 101 games before his injury.

Max Scherzer (3-2) worked seven-plus innings to earn the win in the game, while Vladimir Guerrero Jr. hit a go-ahead two-run homer in the seventh inning to secure the victory. The game was the rubber game of a three-game interleague series.

The Blue Jays are currently leading the major leagues in several statistical categories, including hits (1,116), batting average (.268), and on-base percentage (.337). Springer's return will undoubtedly strengthen their offensive lineup. In addition to his primary role as designated hitter, Springer can also be slotted into the outfield as needed.

The Blue Jays are also expecting the return of Shane Bieber, the 2020 AL Cy Young Award winner, later this month after he recovers from elbow surgery. Bieber is currently rehabbing with the Bisons and could provide the Blue Jays with a front-of-the-rotation weapon.

The victory also improved the Blue Jays' AL-best home record to 40-20. With their strong play and the return of key players like Springer and Bieber, the Blue Jays are poised to make a deep run into the playoffs.
