Alonso slugs two home runs, Nimmo delivers a grand slam again as Mets defeat Yankees for the second consecutive game.
The New York Mets continued their impressive form, defeating the New York Yankees 12-6 in a thrilling Subway Series match on Saturday. The Mets, now winners of four games in a row, have solidified their dominance over their rivals, winning the second series of the season and improving their record against the Yankees to 6-2 over the past two years.
Brandon Nimmo was the star of the show for the Mets, extending his number of grand slams to three this season. Nimmo, who entered the game with a career-high of 17 home runs prior to the All-Star break, has been in outstanding form. Two of his three grand slams this season have been hit this week, further highlighting his impressive display.
Nimmo's latest grand slam, the 18th home run of his season, came in the sixth inning and helped the Mets to extend their lead to 7-2. Interestingly, Nimmo is only the second Met, after Carlos Beltrán, to hit three grand slams in a single season in franchise history. Beltrán achieved this feat in 2006, and Nimmo became the first Met to do so since then.
Pete Alonso also contributed significantly to the Mets' offense. Alonso was responsible for two of the six home runs in Saturday's game, extending the Mets' lead. He now has 20 home runs on the season, placing him second on the Mets behind Soto, who has 21. Alonso's home runs were more than enough insurance for the depleted Mets pitching staff.
Anthony Volpe brought the Yankees within two runs in the top of the seventh inning, but the Mets' offense was too strong, and they went on to secure a comfortable victory. Starling Marte provided an RBI single in the bottom of the second inning, Tyrone Taylor scored on Marte's RBI single, and Lindor scored on an RBI single in the seventh inning. Ben Rice brought home a run with an RBI double in the top of the eighth inning, and Soto scored Lindor in the bottom of the eighth inning with an RBI single.
The Yankees have now lost six games in a row and will face the Mets for the final time of the regular season on Sunday afternoon. Frankie Montas threw 5.2 innings for the Yankees, allowing five hits and four runs (all earned). He recorded two strikeouts and did not issue a walk.
The Mets' victory was a team effort, with key contributions from Nimmo, Alonso, and the rest of the squad. The Mets will be looking to carry this form into their next game and continue their impressive run of form.
Brandon Nimmo, with three grand slams this season, showcased his outstanding form in the Mets' victory, while Pete Alonso's two home runs helped extend their lead against the Yankees in the MLB.
