Fernando Alonso, the seasoned racing veteran, missed the first practice session (FP1) of the 2025 Hungarian Grand Prix due to a persistent back muscle injury. His teammate, Lance Stroll, took his place in the first practice session.

Alonso's injury, which he has been managing over the past week, has cast doubt on his participation in the rest of the race weekend. A decision on his participation in the second practice session (FP2) and the Grand Prix race will be made later after further treatment and assessment.

Stepping in for Alonso during FP1 is Felipe Drugovich, the 2022 Formula 2 champion and Aston Martin's reserve driver. Drugovich, who joined Aston Martin in 2022, has participated in several free practices and tests with the team.

Drugovich's race debut with Aston Martin was expected to happen in 2023 due to Lance Stroll's bike accident injury. However, Stroll recovered from his injury in time, preventing Drugovich from making his race debut.

Despite the recent improvement, Alonso's performance in the Belgian GP was modest. He currently finds himself in 15th place in the season standings with 16 points, behind his teammate Lance Stroll who has accrued more points this season.

The team will closely monitor Alonso's condition and decide on his participation in FP2 and the Grand Prix race in due course. If Alonso is unable to participate, Drugovich will likely make his race debut in the Hungarian GP.

What about Alonso's participation in sports, specifically the Hungarian Grand Prix, remains uncertain due to his injury? If he cannot race, Felipe Drugovich, the reserve driver for Aston Martin, might make his race debut playing the role of hockey substitute in the event.
