Almost Settled Red Hulk Variant Under Thunderbolts Title

With the premier of Thunderbolts, the new squad of mercenaries who've taken over the Avengers mantle (or Avengerz, as per Red Guardian's take) has left fans buzzing. Screenwriter Eric Pearson has been spilling the beans in post-release interviews, revealing tidbits about the original draft'

Originally, Taskmaster (Antonia Dreykov, portrayed by Olga Kurylenko) was set to play a significant role. In the initial script, Taskmaster shifted from being a pawn under her father's control, evolving as a mercenary for Valentina Allegra de Fontaine. A subplot showcased Taskmaster forming a bond with Ghost (Ava Starr), both having endured lab-based manipulation and conditioning. Their relationship was expected to progress, with Ghost guiding Taskmaster towards independence and freedom. Sadly, this intriguing arc was dropped in the final cut.

Another significant alteration revolves around Wyatt Russell's character, John Walker, AKA U.S. Agent. Eric Pearson shared with The Wrap his vision for Walker, who was initially supposed to morph into a Red Hulk. The plan was that Valentina had tricked Walker into believing he needed continuous medication, all while implanting a time bomb within him if needed to trigger his transformation.

The revealing twist was intended to create discord within the team, yet serve as another obstacle for team building. Instead of Walker becoming the Red Hulk after Harrison Ford's portrayal in Captain America: Brave New World, the creative team opted for a different character: Sentry. The decision to introduce Sentry stems from Pearson's fascination with the idea of a Superman-like figure grappling with a dark side.
