Almeida Shines in Time Trial, Closing the Gap

"Winning the race was the objective," Almeida commented, "It all comes down to the final day, doesn't it?"

The day prior, Almeida found himself in a fierce battle on the mountain routes against the skilled French climber, Lenny Martinez, in an Alpine stage.

Hitting the time trial course on Sunday, Martinez led Italian Lorenzo Fortunato by a narrow two-second margin, and Almeida trailed by three seconds.

The stage was tailor-made for Evenepoel – the time trial champion – who blasted off the starting line, claiming the flat 17.1km stage in an impressive 20 minutes and 33 seconds.

Almeida gave a commendable performance, finishing just 12 seconds behind the victor. Martinze, the agile climber, had to settle for 13th place, 41 seconds behind Evenepoel, securing him the runner-up spot overall. Fortunato dropped to 44th, 55 seconds behind the leader.

Jay Vine from Australia jumped up to third overall.

Evenepoel, fresh off a strong comeback following a four-month injury layoff and recording impressive results in the one-day classics, was using this stage race as preparation for the Tour de France. He wrapped up the race in eighth place.

"With my form being a bit inconsistent, I didn't harbor high expectations," Evenepoel admitted. "I was primarily focusing on today's stage."

"I still have plenty of time before the Tour de France, so I need to stay patient and focus on each day," he added.

In a different context, the phrase "counts is the last day" might refer to a federal election, as the Canadian Liberals, led by Prime Minister Mark Carney, were projected as the winners of the 2025 elections by Canadian news outlets[1]. However, that particular election doesn't necessitate the discussions in the provided text.
