Almaty's crime rate has plummeted by nearly half.
Almaty's Mayor Cracks Down on Crime with Tech-Savvy Approach
In the heart of Kazakhstan, Almaty's mayor, Bakytzhan Sagintayev, is leading the charge in reducing crime rates and enhancing public safety, as per Almaty.tv's latest reports.
This crime-fighting mission has seen a 47.5% drop in criminal activities, paired with a 11.6% surge in the clearance rate (increasing from 29.2% to 40.8%). The key to this success story? A determined focus on equipping the police force with top-notch gear and tech.
A staggering 87% of the city's police now boast state-of-the-art equipment, placing Almaty at the pinnacle among Kazakhstan's districts. The police force is set to receive an added boost, with 429 tablets and 33 new vehicles on the horizon.
The digital revolution extends to surveillance, too, with a video monitoring system currently underway. So far this year, 404 "Sergek" hardware-software complexes have been deployed, with 21 at Almaty's entrances and exits. These high-tech devices have identified over 650,000 traffic violations since January alone. Fines totalling over 4.5 billion tenge have been dished out, with 2.6 billion tenge, or 57.7%, swiftly collected.
Modular police posts, installed in Almaty's most crime-prone areas, have proved instrumental in the fight against criminality. These posts, numbering 37 and counting, have fielded over 40,000 inquiries since the start of the year. Residents are praising the initiative for a tangible improvement in their neighborhoods.
Around 2,000 officers and National Guard servicemen are on patrol daily, monitoring 550 routes – 300 for vehicles and 250 for pedestrians.
To foster transparency, 11 police front-offices have been established in all city districts, offering residents a one-stop-shop for convenient services.
Inspired by China's smart city models, Almaty is embracing cutting-edge digital surveillance and policing technologies to ensure a safer city for its inhabitants. With robust monitoring capabilities in place, it's just a matter of time before Almaty redefines public safety standards. [3]
