Almaty Residents Fear Road Damage as Lawn Sinkhole Expands
Residents of Almaty have expressed worry after a hole on a lawn along Al-Farabi Avenue deepened, following a recent ground sink. The issue has raised concerns about potential road damage.
The problem came to light after heavy rain on September 16 caused a road on Ayman Zhuldybay Street to collapse, with thirteen vehicles falling into the hole. Residents are now anxious that the expanding lawn hole could pose a similar threat to the nearby road.
On September 23, flooding was reported on another section of Ayman Zhuldybay Street, further heightening concerns about the city's infrastructure. Meanwhile, communal services plan to conduct a thorough check of engineering networks, excluding the automatic irrigation system, to identify any underlying issues.
Following the incidents, Almaty's akim issued strict reprimands to the akims of Auezov and Medey districts, and dismissed the deputy akim of Bostandyk District for inadequate oversight of contractors. Despite inspections finding no violations in the automatic irrigation system, communal services will investigate other engineering networks to prevent further incidents.
