Almaty Battles Severe Snowstorm: Volunteers and Workers Clear 20-40 cm of Snow
Almaty has been hit by a severe snowstorm, with temperatures plummeting to -10°C. The city has received significant snowfall, leading to a massive cleanup effort involving volunteers and city workers.
The snowstorm began on February 24th at 16:00, intensifying overnight to become heavy by February 25th at 01:00. As of 09:00, Almaty had seen 20-30 cm of snow, with mountainous and foothill areas receiving 30-40 cm. The sudden drop in temperature has added to the challenges faced by the city.
In response, over 200 volunteers from Jas Otan's youth wing and city volunteer organizations have joined forces with communal services workers. They are clearing snow from roads and public spaces. Additionally, around 30 young volunteers from Almaty's youth resource centers are focusing on residential areas, particularly those inhabited by the elderly. As of the morning, 1653 road workers and 653 units of equipment, including 205 sand spreaders, have been deployed to tackle the snow clearance. To keep workers warm, Jas Otan members have organized hot tea for those involved in the cleanup effort.
The snowstorm in Almaty has resulted in significant snowfall and a large-scale cleanup operation.
