State budget proposal includes funding for university hospital loan - Allocated state funds for a sole hospital's loans

The much-needed relief for University Hospital Jena is just around the corner, as it gears up for a 122.3 million euro loan from the state, beginning in 2025. According to Janine Merz, budget spokesperson for the SPD state parliament faction, the initial disbursement will be approximately 48.2 million euros. This loan spans over three years, with the state government coalition (CDU, BSW, and SPD) having recently agreed on a budget compromise with the Left party.

In 2026 and 2027, the hospital can draw up to 38.2 million euros and 35.9 million euros, respectively, as financial aid for both liquidity and investment purposes. Merz further expounded that 10 million euros per year will be assigned for liquidity security, while the remaining funds cater to investments and construction project cost coverage. The Ministry of Education and Science has confirmed these details.

Last summer, the hospital issued an urgent appeal for financial assistance due to its challenging financial situation. In response, the state assembly put together a relief package for the 1,400-bed facility before the September state election, which included the state taking over the hospital's credit commitments and increasing the state's investment subsidy. The SPD-led Science Ministry's rough estimate for 2024 assistance was 20 million euros.

This esteemed institution, with nearly 7,000 employees across 31 clinics and 26 institutes, 2,700 students, and over 380 trainees from 78 nations, is Thuringia's largest employer and training provider.
