Alligator Alcatraz Abuse Towards Mexicans: Recap of Friday's Mananera

In the realm of Mexican politics and society, a series of significant events have unfolded over the past week.

Hernán Bermúdez, accused of leading a crime organization called La Barredora, faces charges of criminal association, extortion, and express kidnapping. Meanwhile, Senator López Hernández, who has not been charged in relation to Bermúdez, has expressed a willingness to speak to authorities about the case against his former security minister, Hernán Bermúdez Requena, who was arrested in Paraguay last week and is now in a federal prison in México state.

The foreign minister, Juan Ramon de la Fuente, has met with 198 Mexicans detained at Alligator Alcatraz, an immigration detention facility in south Florida, following reports of mistreatment or abuse (malos tratos) at the facility. In July, the Associated Press reported that people held at Alligator Alcatraz have claimed to find worms in their food, toilets not flushing, and a high presence of mosquitoes and insects.

President Claudia Sheinbaum has announced an earthquake drill that will take place at midday on Friday, marking the 40th anniversary of the 1985 earthquake that affected Mexico City. She also noted the 8th anniversary of the 2017 Puebla earthquake that claimed hundreds of lives in central Mexico.

A concerning issue that has emerged in recent months is the abandonment of babies in different states across Mexico. State Attorney General's Offices and state DIF family service agencies are responsible for attending to these cases. The Ministry of Women, in collaboration with the IMSS Bienestar health care agency, has a program designed to assist teenage girls and young women who are pregnant and may be at risk of abandoning their baby.

The leadership of Senator Adán Augusto López Hernández in the Morena party in the Senate is being questioned, and he was placed in a federal prison in Mexico on September 2020. In July, the Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI) formally requested that the Federal Attorney General's Office investigate Senator López Hernández for criminal association. The PRI also demanded, unsuccessfully, that he resign.

Some young mothers and fathers may not have the possibility of looking after the baby and unfortunately choose to abandon them. The national DIF organizes and coordinates all the work of the DIF agencies in each federal entity.

As always, we encourage our readers to stay informed and engaged in the issues that matter most.
