An electrifying spectacle unfolded in the Bundestag: Instead of blending in with dull attire, a few representatives from the Greens and The Left decided to stand out during the plenary session, donning vibrant outfits representing the rainbow colors - green, yellow, orange, and red. This daring display wasn't just a fashion statement; it was a powerful symbol of solidarity and protest against Bundestag President Julia Klöckner.

The catalyst for this movement was a heated debate on queerphobic hate crimes in parliament. The Greens urged the government to take decisive action against these attacks, calling for the protection of queer individuals worldwide, especially those targeted by right-wing extremists.

A Battle against Julia Klöckner's Decisions

Simultaneously, the opposition parties ramped up their confrontation with Julia Klöckner concerning her recent decisions surrounding the Christopher Street Day (CSD) in Berlin. In previous years, the queer rainbow network of the Bundestag administration participated in the event, but Julia Klöckner's CDU succinctly dismissed this practice under the guise of "neutrality."

The Bundestag President's decision further stated that, moving forward, the rainbow flag would only fly at the Reichstag building on International Day against Homophobia (May 17) and not for CSD events in Berlin.

A Silent Protest through Color

The backlash against Klöckner's decisions was swift and firm. The Greens and The Left voiced their disapproval by donning rainbow-colored attire in the Bundestag. Green MP Katrin Goering-Eckardt, in a bold move, voiced her stance on social media, writing, "It's just a symbol. But one that makes a difference for many." Her colleague, Till Steffens, joined in, sending a message to Julia Klöckner with a photo of the rainbow protest.

Though shirts bearing inscriptions are forbidden in the Bundestag, there are no restrictions on color choices, ensuring the members could make their statement without fear of reprimand.
