Allied countries provide funding for initial Ukraine military aid, claims sources, during Trump administration tenure.
The Trump administration has taken a significant step in supporting Ukraine, as it has approved the first U.S. weapons aid packages under a new financial agreement with allies. The new mechanism, known as the Prioritized Ukraine Requirements List (PURL), has been instrumental in facilitating these deliveries.
Denmark, the Netherlands, and Norway have contributed financially to fund the U.S. weapons deliveries to Ukraine under the PURL. The exact inventory of weapons approved for purchase by the Europeans for Ukraine has not been disclosed.
Experts suggest that Ukraine's current military needs remain consistent with previous months, with a focus on air defences, interceptors, systems, rockets, and artillery. The new aid package includes air defence systems, which Ukraine urgently needs due to the increase in Russian drone and missile attacks.
The Undersecretary of Defense for Policy, Elbridge Colby, has approved as many as two $500 million shipments under PURL. The source added that the flow of equipment has helped Ukraine maintain its defensive lines.
So far, the Trump administration has only sold weapons to Ukraine or shipped donations, which were authorised by former President Joe Biden. These packages could soon ship, marking a resumption of arms supply to Kyiv.
However, the Pentagon did not provide a comment when asked for one. The source stated that the PURL list includes a significant amount of requested equipment for Ukraine. The PURL list, containing requested weapons for Ukraine, is progressing through the Pentagon's policy unit.
The renewed transatlantic cooperation aims to bolster Kyiv with as much as $10 billion worth of weapons. This move comes as U.S. President Donald Trump has expressed frustration with Moscow's ongoing attacks on Ukraine despite his efforts to achieve a negotiated end to the conflict. The aid is expected to provide a much-needed boost to Ukraine's defence capabilities.
