Alliance of Bolivarian Nations (ALBA) Supports Maduro's Re-election, Condemns Foreign Meddling in Venezuela's Elections
Mexico City, Mexico, August 27, 2024 (our website) - In the face of international attempts to discredit the results of the July 28 presidential election, the Bolivarian Alliance for the Peoples of America-Peoples' Trade Treaty (ALBA-TCP) has thrown its weight behind Nicolás Maduro.
The joint statement expressed heartfelt congratulations to Maduro and his people, commending their resilience and commitment to justice in fending off the ongoing coup attempt. ALBA-TCP's leaders reiterated their unwavering support for the reelected government, gathering in Caracas for an extraordinary summit to tackle the issue head-on.
The ten-member bloc criticized the "tentacles of fascism" responsible for backing the US-supported opposition, attempting to undermine the election's legitimacy. In particular, they called out the US's imperialist interference in the region.
During the meeting, Venezuelan President Maduro noted the resurgence of fascism in Europe, South America, and the US. The Supreme Court's decision to ratify Maduro's victory and the electoral authority's declaration of his victory with 52 percent of the vote were defended by the bloc.
Various heads of state, including Cuba's Miguel Díaz-Canel, Bolivia's Luis Arce, and Nicaragua's Daniel Ortega, expressed their support for Maduro and his administration during the session. Díaz-Canel decried the unending US meddling in the region, while Prime Minister of Saint Vincent and the Grenadines Ralph Gonsalves demanded an end to US interference in Latin America and the Caribbean.
The US, initially recognizing Maduro's rival as the winner, later backtracked on their statement. Despite this, US officials have continued to support the opposition's claim of victory and called for a "transition." The US has joined Colombia and Brazil in dialogue efforts, however, not officially recognized by Venezuela.
Brazil and Colombia issued a joint statement after a conversation between their presidents, expressing desire for the publication of detailed election results and an end to sanctions against Venezuela. Meanwhile, China reaffirmed its support for Venezuelan institutions, sovereignty, and the election results, urging respect for the choice made by the Venezuelan people.
Other countries, such as Russia and Honduras, have sided with Maduro, lending him additional political support. The ALBA-TCP culminated the summit with a nine-point statement, reaffirming the region as a "zone of peace" and calling for an end to foreign intervention.
The Bolivarian Alliance for the Peoples of America was established in 2004 as a counterweight to the United States' neoliberal agenda, eventually evolving into a progressive economic bloc advocating for collaboration between member states.
In April, the bloc approved its short and long-term agenda, as well as a special declaration condemning the genocide in Palestine, during their most recent ordinary summit.
