Allgäu’s 2026 kicks off with fire, flight and frosty thrills

The Allgäu regions are kicking off 2026 with a mix of daring traditions, winter sports, and lively entertainment. From torchlit river swims to world-class ski jumping, the new year promises excitement across its towns and valleys. Festivals, races, and performances will keep visitors busy well into February.

On New Year’s Day, Füssen will host its annual Torchlight Swim, where brave participants in neoprene suits will float down the icy Lech River after dark. Each swimmer carries a torch, creating a glowing procession to welcome 2026.

Oberstdorf takes centre stage for ski jumping fans. The women’s Two-Nights-Tour returns for its third edition on January 1, followed by the Ski Flying World Championships from January 22 to 25. Both events draw international competitors and spectators to the regions’ famous slopes.

Meanwhile, Oberstaufen’s Winter Magic festival runs until January 6, offering markets, concerts, and live performances. Visitors can enjoy seasonal treats and entertainment against a snowy backdrop.

For something different, Kempten’s Stadttheater presents Secrets of the Dragwoods, a drag show by the Allgäuer Drag Voyage troupe on January 5. Vicky Voyage leads the performance, blending humour and glamour for an evening of theatrical fun.

Later in the month, Tannheimer Tal hosts the International Hot Air Balloon Festival from January 11 to 31. Flights cost €300 per person, with colourful balloons dotting the winter sky. Weather permitting, Sulzberg’s Horn Sled Racing follows on January 18, while Unterjoch closes January with the International Sled Dog Race on the 31st and February 1.

The Allgäu regions’ 2026 calendar blends adventure, culture, and sport. Events like the Torchlight Swim and Ski Flying Championships highlight its unique traditions, while festivals and races offer entertainment for all ages. Most activities depend on snow conditions, so organisers will confirm final details closer to the dates.
