Allegedly Embezzling Funds: The Estonian Prosecutor's Office Accuses "Glory to Ukraine" Organization Founder of Stealing 450,000 Euros in Donations (ERR)
Johanna-Maria Lehtme Faces Embezzlement Allegations Over Humanitarian Aid Funds
Johanna-Maria Lehtme, a renowned figure in Estonia due to her charitable activities, is currently embroiled in a legal controversy. The Estonian Prosecutor's Office has accused Lehtme, the founder of the organization "Glory to Ukraine," of embezzling 450 thousand euros in donations intended for humanitarian aid to Ukraine.
Lehtme gained significant recognition, including the European of the Year award from the Estonian president in 2022 and winning a parliamentary seat with the Eesti 200 party in 2023. However, her political career took a turn when public accusations of embezzlement surfaced while she was a member of the Riigikogu (the State Assembly, the highest representative and legislative authority in the Republic of Estonia).
The investigation found that Lehtme signed contracts with a Ukrainian company, IC Construction, for uniforms and equipment at inflated prices. The excess funds were partly used as company profits and allegedly shared with her accomplice, Gennady Vaskiv, the former deputy mayor of Lviv and director of IC Construction.
Despite the charges, it is important to note that humanitarian aid was indeed delivered to Ukraine using €6.5 million in donations. The case centres on the misuse of some funds that could have been better spent on aid rather than going to intermediaries or personal gain.
Lehtme has exercised her legal right to refrain from making statements during ongoing legal proceedings in Estonia and Ukraine. Currently, she is formally charged but not convicted, and legal proceedings are ongoing. The NGO ceased operations in October 2024 after public donations decreased sharply following these revelations.
In summary, Johanna-Maria Lehtme is currently facing legal action in Estonia for embezzlement related to her leadership of the Slava Ukraini NGO, with the case actively proceeding. The overestimated prices for humanitarian aid were concluded with the Ukrainian company IC Construction, and the total damage from the overestimated prices exceeded 450 thousand euros.
In the wake of the embezzlement allegations, Johanna-Maria Lehtme's political career and humanitarian work have become topics of discussion in the realms of politics, general news, and crime-and-justice. The ongoing legal proceedings against Lehtme, including her silence during the investigations, have raised questions about the misuse of humanitarian aid funds and the integrity of those in positions of power.
