Allegations Surface Regarding Potential Telegram Restrictions in Russia
Busted: The Myth of Telegram Block in Russia
Don't believe the hype! Reports circulating on social media claiming that Telegram will once again be blocked in Russia are rubbish. So, where did this misinformation originate? Our site, teaming up with "Lapsha Media," has dug up the truth.
"Say Goodbye to Telegram in Russia - Law Approved by State Duma," blares one Telegram channel. This propaganda sprouted after the Russian State Duma backed the homegrown messaging app Max. Yet, the notion of Telegram facing a nationwide ban was debunked by Russian President's press secretary, Dmitry Peskov and the First Deputy Chairman of the State Duma's Information Policy Committee, Anton Gorelkin.
"Nope, no such plans afoot," Peskov declared. In his Telegram channel, Gorelkin expressed the belief that Telegram, by adhering to the law, wouldn't face the extreme consequences of being blocked. "Frequently asked question: Will Max's arrival mean the end of Telegram? I reckon if it strives to comply with the laws of the countries where it's so active, then a harsh crackdown isn't on the cards," he wrote.
