Allegations Rise in Poland Over Clandestine Discussions Between Germany and Adjacent Nations; Government Denies as PiS Propaganda Effort

Rewritten Article:

Poland's opposition leader, Jarosław Kaczynski, of the Law and Justice (PiS) party, has slammed the current Polish government for allegedly engaging in "clandestine discussions" with Germany over the transfer of migrants – a charge swiftly dismissed as "politically motivated propaganda" by Interior Minister Tomasz Siemoniak.

At a press conference in Słubice on Saturday, Kaczynski, a former Deputy Prime Minister, unleashed rage over media reports in Germany claiming that migrants were being transferred under vague conditions. He claimed that the Polish authorities had kept the public in the dark regarding these developments, learning instead from foreign sources.

"It seems like there's some under-the-table banter going on between Germany and neighboring countries," Kaczynski said. "If this chatter is indeed happening behind closed doors, it's another scandal. It seems like every single day brings a fresh one."

Kaczynski insisted that this situation illustrated Poland's loss of sovereignty under the government of Donald Tusk, whom he accused of allowing Berlin to dictate terms.

"This is a shift in our status as a free nation. If the Germans have their people in power here, they believe they can run roughshod over our nation. Now, German police vehicles can even be spotted deep into our territory," Kaczynski declared.

Reacting to Kaczynski's allegations, Siemoniak described them as baseless at a Wałbrzych event on Saturday, emphasizing that the number of migrants returned from Germany to Poland had actually decreased in 2024 compared to the previous year, when PiS was still in power.

"The number of returns was 20% higher in 2023 under PiS than it is now. We enforced tighter procedures, and border guards scrutinize each case thoroughly. PiS is weaponizing this issue for political gains, distracting from their own shortcomings, particularly concerning visa policies," Siemoniak pointed out.

The minister underscored that all migrant returns complied with legal agreements and that PiS was merely attempting to stoke fear of Germany and immigration as part of their broader narrative.

"Two things PiS utilizes to startle Poles – Germany and migrants – have conveniently converged into one issue during this election period," he observed.

Siemoniak also reproached temporary border controls between Germany and Poland, asserting that they mainly hamper local residents rather than effectively managing migration.

"We oppose border checks within the Schengen area. However, we monitor the situation closely, and our response will depend on the actions of the new German government," Siemoniak added.

Tensions over Migration Policies

Tensions between Poland and Germany on migration policies have escalated, with the dispute concerning migrants returning to Poland under the EU's Dublin Regulation – which obliges asylum seekers to apply for protection in the first EU country they enter – and readmission agreements. Germany can legally return migrants to Poland if there is proof they initially crossed into the Schengen Area through Polish territory.

The migration issue has become a recurring theme in Polish political debates, particularly under PiS, which has constructed its rhetoric around resisting EU migration policies and casting Germany as a dominant force meddling in Polish affairs. Kaczynski's recent statements align with PiS's longstanding stance of accusing the Tusk government of submission to Berlin.

With Poland's opposition parties gearing up for presidential elections, the migration issue is poised to remain a contentious point between PiS and the ruling Civic Coalition.
