Allegations of Wage Disparity Against Kansas City Chiefs in Racial Discrimination Lawsuit: Media Reports
In a shocking turn of events, former NFL player and Kansas City Chiefs staffer, Ramzee Robinson, is sueing the team, claiming racial discrimination and unequal pay. At 41 years old, Robinson alleges he was paid significantly less than his white counterparts, a whopping $146,932 less according to reports from The Athletic and the Daily Mail. Robinson's lawsuit, filed in the Western District of Missouri on June 15th, lays out the allegations in detail.
Robinson, who formerly held the position of director of player engagement, claims his salary was $125,000, while comparable positions with other NFL teams averaged around $171,932, bypassing other benefits. To add fuel to the fire, Robinson asserts that he asked for a salary review, which was denied by Chiefs president, Mark Donovan.
It gets worse. The lawsuit additionally alleges an instance where a Black woman, earning $50,000, resigned after the Chiefs failed to consider a raise or promotion. Shortly after, a white woman was brought on, earning $80,000 for the same role, showcasing a possible racial pay imbalance within the organization.
On top of the pay disparities, Robinson claims that his employment was terminated after being accused of attacking a colleague, Melissa Weinsz. However, Robinson vehemently denies the allegations and claims that he was never shown the security footage corroborating the incident. Weinsz was subsequently promoted to the director of player engagement "within days" of Robinson's termination.
The Chiefs have yet to comment on the matter publicly, citing it as an active legal issue. However, they've made it clear they do not tolerate discrimination of any kind.
Robinson, picked as the final draft in the 2007 NFL Draft by the Detroit Lions, spent years in the NFL before transitioning into an office role with various teams, including the Philadelphia Eagles, and the Canadian team, the Saskatchewan Roughriders. Robinson is now seeking $5 million, plus declaratory and equitable relief.
