Allegations of unfaithfulness within the Schwesig administration, with Minister Pegel apparently being oblivious to it all
In a series of events that have shaken the political landscape of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, the Schwerin Public Prosecutor's Office has launched an investigation into allegations of embezzlement or aiding and abetting it, in connection with the procurement and accounting of COVID-19 protective equipment by the office 365. The investigation was sparked by the revelation that Andreas Walus, a high-ranking police officer, procured protective equipment for the counties in 2020 but never billed them. However, it's important to note that as of now, no charges have been brought against Mr. Walus. The investigation also involves the Interior State Secretary of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Wolfgang Schmuellling, who is a member of the Social Democrats. The Public Prosecutor's Office claims that Mr. Schmuellling failed to process claims totaling 430,000 euros, which resulted in these claims lapsing. The investigation was not prompted by the promotion of Mr. Walus, as the Schwerin Public Prosecutor's Office maintains that the searches were independent of the events surrounding his promotion. The promotion of Mr. Walus, which was met with anger from the police leadership and opposition, was withdrawn almost simultaneously with the raids by the Schwerin Public Prosecutor's Office. Interestingly, the Interior Ministry learned about the investigations immediately upon the execution of the search measures, with the notification coming on September 17, 2025. However, Minister Pegel, according to his memory, knew nothing beforehand - neither about the promotion of a high-ranking police officer nor about the Public Prosecutor's Office's searches. The State Secretary informed Minister Pegel about his decision to promote Mr. Walus after the promotion had taken place. It's worth noting that the Interior Ministry was not informed about the raids on Schmuellling and Walus before they occurred, with the Schwerin Public Prosecutor's Office not informing the Interior Ministry about the raids. Minister Pegel emphasized cooperation with the investigation without mentioning prior notice. There is no specific information indicating that Minister Pegel was informed prior to the searches by the Schwerin Public Prosecutor's Office on September 17, 2025. The raids were conducted in the offices of Mr. Schmuellling at the Interior Ministry and Mr. Walus at the State Office for Central Tasks and Technology of the Police, Fire and Disaster Protection Mecklenburg-Vorpommern (LPBK MV). The investigation is ongoing, and further developments are expected to unfold in the coming weeks. The public and the political landscape of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern await the findings of the Schwerin Public Prosecutor's Office with keen interest.
