Allegations of Sexual Harassment Leveled Against Official in San Marcos Arteaga, Oaxaca Workforce
In the heart of San Marcos Arteaga, a mas was held by the Marea Verde Mixteca collective, demanding justice and zero impunity for Mayor Leonardo Villanueva. The collective's demands for an investigation and punishment for the mayor, conducted impartially and with a gender perspective, continue to stand.
The march participants' chants of "No to impunity", "We won't be silent", and "We will continue raising our voice until there is justice!" remain unchanged. One of the banners at the march read, "For truth and justice, in memory of all the girls, who were not believed, I believe you."
The collective has been demanding an investigation and punishment for Mayor Villanueva since June, due to allegations of sexual harassment against him and municipal workers. The investigation into these allegations started a month ago, according to the collective.
The march participants also called for accountability and condemnation of the mayor, who is also accused of misappropriation of funds. The collective members pointed out the lack of progress in the investigation of the sexual harassment allegations against Mayor Villanueva.
Since then, Alanis González Villanueva has been in charge of the Municipal Presidency office. Mayor Leonardo Villanueva signed a 60-day leave to be investigated for any resulting crimes. The municipal palace of San Marcos Arteaga was taken and closed on July 14, and reopened in mid-August.
The collective is urging for a thorough and impartial investigation, with a focus on gender issues, to ensure justice is served. The collective's demands echo the cries of many who seek an end to impunity and a voice for those who have been silenced.
