Allegations of Bribery Against Unification Church Leader Disputed During Inquiry Involving Former First Lady

In a significant development, Hak Ja Han, the leader of South Korea's Unification Church, is currently under investigation for allegations of bribery. The investigation, led by a special prosecutor, is focused on claims that the church, via a senior official, sought to influence policy decisions or approvals benefitting its business and development goals.

The allegations suggest that the church offered luxury gifts, such as Chanel bags and a diamond necklace, to former First Lady Kim Keon-Hee as part of efforts to secure political favors. The specific alleged bribe to Kim Keon-Hee is reported to be worth approximately 80 million won (around US$58,000).

Hak Ja Han has appeared for questioning while citing health concerns, after previously declining summonses. She has publicly rejected all charges of wrongdoing and stated that she never directed any illegal political funding or bribes. The church insists that the alleged behavior was not authorized by top leadership.

Another figure involved in the investigation is Kweon Seong-dong, a lawmaker close to former President Yoon Suk Yeol, who is suspected of receiving political funding or favors from the church official. Kweon Seong-dong has denied the accusations.

The probe's outcome, especially regarding responsibility for subordinate actions, could set a legal precedent for similar cases. Questions about political funding and influence are central to the ongoing investigation. Seizure of evidence and concerns over document destruction are also key aspects of the probe.

The Unification Church has denied institutional involvement in the allegations. The church expresses regret for misconduct by a former senior church official. However, they claim that the accused official acted independently and that Hak Ja Han herself was not involved in the alleged bribery.

Former First Lady Kim Keon-Hee is one of the targets of the probe. The courts will decide on the arrest warrant for Han in due course. Other individuals investigated in connection with corruption allegations against the Unification Church and Hak Ja Han include certain high-ranking church officials and business associates involved in financial transactions.

This investigation underscores the importance of transparency and accountability in political funding and influence, particularly in South Korea. As the investigation continues, it is crucial to maintain a clear and objective understanding of the facts as they are presented.
