NANS Stands Firm: Rejects Claims of Politician Influence, Denies Allegations Against Seyi Tinubu
Allegations of Blackmail Attempt - NANS Denies Involvement in Seyi Tinubu's Alleged Interference Matter
In a blunt response, the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has dismissed accusations that the organization has been infiltrated by politicians, including the son of President Bola Tinubu, Seyi.
Speaking through a statement signed by the National Public Relations Officer, Adeyemi Ajasa, NANS declared that those propagating such fallacies are intent on smearing the Association's reputation.
Previously, an individual, Henry Okunomu, who identified himself as a former Senate President of the association, raised a red flag during a televised interview on Channels television regarding the rising influence of political actors within NANS. Okunomu also alleged that Seyi Tinubu had been meddling in the internal affairs of NANS and questioned his motivations and investment in the student union.
"[With the presence of the President's son for the past year], he has made every effort to ensure the organization remains faceless. I'm unsure of what he intends to achieve, but the public ought to question his reasons for involvement in NANS," Okunomu reportedly stated during his interview.
Responding to these claims, NANS distanced itself from Okunomu, urging the public and media to be vigilant against impostors. Ajasa highlighted, "Mr Henry Okunomu has never occupied a position within our association," branding Okunomu's assertions as unfounded and an attempt at character assassination.
NANS further expressed its worry over media platforms providing a platform for individuals peddling falsehood with the intent of damaging the reputation of a powerful organization such as NANS. The association emphasized its commitment to transparency, outlining that prospective leaders undergo a rigorous vetting process, including obtaining forms, comprehensive screening, and other crucial steps before conventions.
Regarding the leadership tussle, NANS clarified that Abubakr is in no way the President of the National Association of Nigerian Students. The legitimate and duly elected President of NANS, representing the student population of Nigeria, is Comrade Olushola Oladoja.
Furthermore, reiterating its independence from political control, the association underscored that NANS is not an affiliated entity of any political party, government, or politician. This position has been reflected in the various stances NANS has taken regarding unfavorable policies affecting the interests of the student body, regardless of the political implications.
