Allegations made by UP Congress Chief, Ajay Rai, accuse Prime Minister Modi of winning the Varanasi seat through vote manipulation.

In a controversial claim, Uttar Pradesh Congress president Ajay Rai has alleged that Prime Minister Narendra Modi won his Lok Sabha seat in Varanasi through vote manipulation in the 2019 elections. Rai's allegations include claims of website shutdown during the counting process and suspicious changes in leads, but there is no public record indicating that the Election Commission of India (ECI) conducted any official investigation or issued an official response regarding these allegations.

During the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, Rai was leading for seven rounds before the official result was declared as a win for Modi. Rai and his party, along with the INDIA alliance, have been protesting to safeguard democracy, raising concerns about electoral roll tampering and fake votes. However, these protests appear politically symbolic rather than outcomes of any formal ECI inquiry.

Rai has also accused the BJP of engaging in name-change politics instead of setting up new industries. In July 2025, he claimed that Modi might leave Varanasi by 2029. He has also raised concerns about alleged voter manipulation in Bihar through the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls.

In other news, schools and colleges are closed in Thane, Navi Mumbai, Panvel, and Palghar on Wednesday, August 20, due to Maharashtra rains. A 3,000-page chargesheet has been filed against ex-Religare chairperson Rashmi Saluja in the ESOP case by Mumbai Police EOW.

In a separate development, the Centre is introducing bills in Parliament for the removal of PM, CMs, and ministers facing serious criminal charges. Rai has previously described the Rafale fighter jets as "toys" and accused the BJP of shutting down factories in Ballia and Ghazipur, which were established under Congress governments.

As the political landscape continues to evolve, these allegations and developments highlight the ongoing tensions and debates in Indian politics. It is essential for the ECI to maintain the integrity of the electoral process and address any allegations of vote manipulation or irregularities promptly and transparently.
