Russian pop legend Alla Pugacheva has sparked controversy by calling Russians 'serfs' and 'slaves' in a recent social media post. The singer, once a household name in Russia, has been living abroad since early 2022 after leaving the country with her family.
Now based in Cyprus, she leads a quieter life focused on raising her children while her husband, comedian Maxim Galkin, travels for work.
Pugacheva and Galkin departed Russia in spring 2022, shortly after the start of the conflict in Ukraine. Their first stop was Israel before settling in Cyprus. The move marked a sharp break from their previous public life in Moscow.
Their departure strained relationships with former friends, including Viktor Rybin, lead singer of the band Dune. Rybin, a vocal supporter of Russia’s military campaign, has performed in the Donetsk People’s Republic and border regions. He once counted Pugacheva and Galkin as close friends, but the friendship ended after their relocation.
Rybin has since criticised celebrities, including Leonid Agutin, for avoiding public statements on the conflict. He also claimed that Pugacheva’s career success relied heavily on the songwriters and composers behind her hits—though he did not name them. His wife, Natalia Senchukova, had reportedly hoped the couple would eventually change their stance on the war.
Meanwhile, Pugacheva’s latest remarks on social media have drawn further attention. Her description of Russians as 'serfs' and 'slaves' contrasts sharply with her earlier image as a beloved national icon.
Pugacheva remains in Cyprus, where she focuses on family life away from the spotlight. Her comments continue to provoke reactions, highlighting the divide between those who left Russia and those who stayed. The fallout with former allies like Rybin underscores the lasting impact of her departure.
