Aligarh assault incident: Analysis reveals buffalo meat, not cattle, was involved
Four individuals, identified as Nadeem, Aqeel, Arbaz, and Qadeem, were brutally assaulted by a mob in Alahdadpur village, Aligarh, on May 24, under the suspicion of transporting beef. The attackers demanded money from the traders and intensified the assault when they refused to pay.
Upon being informed, the police reached the spot and rescued the victims. However, initial inquiries led to the registration of a case against the victims under the Cow Slaughter Act.
A forensic report from a laboratory in Mathura, released on Tuesday, confirmed that the meat being transported was actually buffalo meat, not beef. Based on this report, the sections under which the victims were booked have been removed, authorities said.
Three men have been arrested following the incident, and an FIR has been filed against 13 named and 25 unnamed attackers for various offenses, including attempt to murder, rioting, and extortion. The incident has drawn sharp condemnation from community leaders, who have demanded justice for the victims.
The attack, which drew attention to the tension between communal groups, sparked concerns about communal harmony in the region. The incident underscores the need for stricter measures to curb vigilante violence and safeguard the rights of minorities.
In a statement, the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) and Bajrang Dal units in Aligarh distanced themselves from the May 24 incident. The police and community leaders continue to investigate the case and ensure the safety of small-time meat traders, who are often targeted by cow vigilantes on suspicion of transporting beef.
