Alien figure transitions to female form, adorned with a soccer ball, for Euro 2025 tournament in Switzerland
Basel, Switzerland, is set to become a vibrant hub for the upcoming UEFA Women's European Championship 2025, with the city introducing a series of unique pedestrian crossing lights. These lights, featuring a woman kicking a soccer ball, are designed to celebrate and promote the tournament, engaging both residents and visitors during the month-long event.
The innovative design concept was provided by the civil engineering department of St. Gallen, Switzerland, and the manufacturing of these special traffic lights was carried out by the same company responsible for producing Basel’s regular traffic signals. The city's transport department, led by spokeswoman Nicole Ryf-Stocker, has enthusiastically embraced this idea, with 12 locations in the city featuring the new lights. Notable installations include spots near the Parc Saint-Jacques stadium, which hosts five matches including the final, and the main train station.
These pedestrian lights not only serve as a distinctive urban design element but also reflect Basel’s creative approach to embedding the tournament’s spirit into the cityscape. They support UEFA's broader aim to spotlight diverse European cities and foster excitement around the tournament. The lights will remain in place at least until the end of the Women’s Euro, with potential for extension, thus leaving a memorable legacy that highlights women's football and promotes gender equality in sports.
Switzerland's central European location makes travel easier for teams and fans, and the country's readiness and clear vision for the tournament were cited as key reasons for its selection. The tournament will be held in eight stadiums across cities like Zurich, Bern, Geneva, and Lucerne, all of which are well-connected by public transport. Switzerland beat out proposals from France, Poland, and a joint Nordic bid including Denmark, Finland, Norway, and Sweden. The UEFA Executive Committee voted in favour of Switzerland in April 2023.
The goal of Switzerland's legacy plan is to use the tournament as a catalyst to grow women's football domestically. The altered pedestrian crossing lights are just one part of this plan, which aims to boost participation, develop youth talent, and professionalize the women's league in Switzerland.
As the Women's European Championship kicks off in Basel, these soccer-themed pedestrian lights are sure to add a touch of excitement and celebration to the cityscape, making it a must-visit destination for football fans from around the world.
