Disney's long-awaited partnership with Noah Hawley to bring the Alien franchise to television has finally come to fruition, with the first two episodes of the sci-fi series Alien: Earth now available on Hulu and FX.
The show, which has been in the works for over five years, has been met with generally positive reviews for its scale, visual effects, and promising setup. Critics praise the show's scope and scale, with the dramatic impact of a spaceship crashing into a city creating a war zone-like spectacle effectively conveying the series' ambitious scale from the start. The visuals and production value are highly lauded, with Disney reportedly investing $250 million to create stunning sci-fi horror effects and alien designs that fit alongside the franchise’s cinematic standards.
The horror and action elements largely satisfy fans, with gore, suspense, and haunted house-style scenes echoing the tone of the original Alien films. The character Wendy and her hybrid "Lost Boys" incorporate a compelling long-term narrative, setting up interest in how their enhanced bodies can counter the aliens.
However, some reviewers note flaws in pacing and character arcs. The emotional connection between key characters, such as the sibling bond between Wendy and Hermit, feels underdeveloped and less impactful. The character Morrow is viewed as a narrative device lacking depth, making his scenes comparatively dry and less engaging. Some critics also suggest that tension could be built up better, especially in scenes that had potential to be more gripping.
Alien: Earth features a diverse cast, including Sydney Chandler, Alex Lawther, Timothy Olyphant, Essie Davis, Samuel Blenkin, Babou Ceesay, David Rysdahl, Adrian Edmondson, Adarsh Gourav, Jonathan Ajayi, Erana James, Lily Newmark, Diem Camille, and Moe Bar-El. Noah Hawley wrote and directed the pilot episode and also wrote the second episode, titled "Mr. October."
New episodes of Alien: Earth will debut at 8 p.m. ET on Hulu and 8 p.m. ET/PT on FX for the rest of the season. For those who want a detailed recap of episodes one and two, a spoiler-filled version will be available on Wednesday morning.
