Algorand's $30B-to-$2B collapse sparks leadership overhaul and US reboot

Algorand is making major changes as it faces a sharp decline in value and market position. The blockchain network, once valued at nearly $30 billion, has seen its market cap drop to around $1-2 billion. Leadership shifts, workforce cuts, and a new US base signal a rebuilding phase for the project.

The Algo Foundation has relocated from Singapore to the United States under new leadership. Former US Attorney General Bill Barr now heads the board, marking a strategic shift in direction. Alongside this move, the foundation has cut about 25% of its workforce to reduce costs.

A $15 million deal with Algorand Technologies aims to streamline key parts of the ecosystem. The restructuring comes as the network's token, ALGO, trades near $0.086—a 97% drop from its $3.28 peak in 2021. The decline reflects broader market trends, including reduced venture capital funding and competition among Layer-1 blockchains.

The community has pushed for clearer governance, confirming the removal of creator fees. All trades now operate through standard decentralised exchange (DEX) systems. Meanwhile, the Chief Technology Officer has stepped down, with no replacement announced yet.

The SEC's classification of ALGO as a commodity could encourage more decentralised finance (DeFi) activity on the network over time. With leadership changes, cost-cutting measures, and a restructured ecosystem, Algorand is working to stabilise its position. The market is now watching for stronger signals of recovery.
