Alfa Romeo Upgrades Its Game with New Models and a Rear-Wheel-Drive Gem

In a bid to rebrand as a global luxury powerhouse, Alfa Romeo CEO Jean-Philippe Imparato is set to unveil a new model annually, with the entry-level option leading the charge this year. But that's not all—there are some fascinating twists in store.

Imparato has been a master of mystery lately, playing coy with certain aspects while leaving speculation at an all-time high. One truth remains crystal clear—Alfa Romeo will introduce a fresh model every year for the foreseeable future. This year's headliner will be joined by other marvels in 2025 and 2026, all hailing from the extended STLA platform.

Electrified Giulia variants are a strong possibility, as per Imparato. He hints at an entirely electric midsize segment that will offer power outputs ranging from 340 to 952 PS, delivering a WLTP range of 700 kilometers. The electric network inside will be an 800-volt system. When push comes to shove, Imparato ponders a six-cylinder PHEV but leaves the matter ambiguous.

The rumor mill has Alfa Romeo considering a leap into the 'E-segment.' But, the question lingers: why should Alfa Romeo—with its rich heritage and Stradale 33, a million-dollar supersports car—diverge from the path blazed by Maserati?

A Rear-Wheel-Drive Miracle is in the Works

Imparato hints at a high-impact rear-wheel-drive model that has the potential to revolutionize model development. The details are scarce, but it's safe to assume this mystery vehicle is earmarked for lucrative markets in China, Europe, and the USA.

As for the Brera and GTV faithful, Imparato assures them an adequate successor is on the horizon. He confirms a Spider, but leaves the door open for an open-top Alfa Romeo that would debut in 2029. The Alfa Romeo brand, at its core, represents "red, Italian, and sporty."

The Junior Veloce Amps Up the Power

Alfa Romeo's Junior compact SUV shares genetics with its cousin, the PSA. Despite its questionable lineage, the Junior captivates with its charming appearance. A boost in power for the (electric) top model now delivers a punchy 280 PS, and a sportier suspension setup to boot. The Junior's agility and acceleration are impressive, with a 0-100 km/h sprint time of 5.9 seconds and a max speed of 200 km/h.

For Alfisti who prefer internal combustion engines, the Junior is still a viable option. Based on the Common Modular Platform, the Junior is available in various configurations, including gasoline powertrains and a hybrid drive.

Alfa Romeo's Upcoming Lineup

Get ready for Alfa enthusiasts to be excited in the coming year as major models hit the market. Whether electric powertrains will find favor in such emotionally charged vehicles remains to be seen. But, the STLA platforms are adaptable, ensuring an internal combustion engine resurrection if necessary.

Alfa Romeo's future models will include:

  1. Stelvio (2025)
  2. Birthplace: Cassino plant using the STLA Large platform.
  3. Appearance: Larger, more aerodynamic design revolving around the Alfa Romeo's sporty DNA.
  4. Powertrains: Electric, thermal, and hybrid options for a broader customer reach.
  5. Giulia (2026)
  6. Production: STLA Large platform.
  7. Design: Becoming more crossover-like, maintaining its customary sportiness.
  8. Powertrains: Expected electric powertrains, with Quadrifoglio exceeding 1,000 horsepower.
  9. E-SUV (2027)
  10. Looks: Sporty, aerodynamic design with striking dimensions.
  11. Powertrains: Electric and thermal versions, accommodating diverse consumer preferences.
  12. Tonale (Between 2028 and 2029)
  13. Changes: A facelift keeping production in Italy on the STLA Medium platform.
  14. Powertrains: Electric and hybrid variants with some size growth compared to the current model.

These models see Alfa Romeo adopting a "multi-energy" strategy encompassing internal combustion engines, hybrid powertrains, and electric vehicles. The push for diversity aims to boost Alfa Romeo's U.S. presence, which has been challenged by a network of dealers.

As the future unfolds, only time will tell if Alfa Romeo's bold plans for electrification, internal combustion engines, and exciting new vehicles will come to fruition.
